LOS ALAMITOS, CA - FEBRUARY 17, 2019 - Owned by the partnership of Bryant, Brooks, Lewis, Hubbard, et al, Apollitical Flying broke out from post number nine at the start of the $101,000 Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes, but once he got rolling there was no stopping him, as he pulled away to a ¾ length victory over Pedro Rangel’s Cavuto on a cold and windy Sunday night.
The official chart of the race listed a 22 miles per hour tail wind. The gusting wind aided Apollitical Flying to post the meet’s fastest time at 350 yards of :17.294 and the second fastest time ever in the 16-year history of the Maiden Stakes. The stakes record of :17.22 was set by Brooklyn Boy in 2010.
Ridden by Jesus Rios Ayala, Apollitical Flying has warmed up to Los Alamitos over his last two outings. He posted the fastest qualifying time of :17.61 when winning his trial on January 27. That victory was his first in six starts. It’s now been followed by this sizzling victory, which earned his connections the first place prize of $42,420. The son of Apollitical Jess and out of the Southern Cartel mare Southern Fling had only won $5,905 in his previous outings prior to this final.
